Another statue and back to drawing

I've enjoyed the challenge of painting statues (link here) so had a go at another, this one from a wonderful photo by Caymanmamma.  I used salt again to give texture to the stonework as I added pigment wet into wet and tried to counterbalance the lights and darks to make the subject stand out from it's background.  I've also had the graphite pencils out again for the first time in a while and did a quick character study - this is one of the subjects in this month's Drawing Challenge on I Draw and Paint.

I do love drawing faces full of character like this.  I did this one as a bit of a practice before starting on a portrait I've been wanting to do ever since I saw a fabulous photograph of a Sherpa lady at a lecture by Kenton Cool last month.  I contacted Kenton and he very kindly emailed me the photograph - I really need to practice my graphite work before I start though as I really want to try and do justice to the wonderful photograph.

I've also finally opened the pots of brusho I bought a few months back and had a play but not sure if I'll be posting yet!  Still a work in progress - it sure is vibrant stuff!

  3. Another great painting and the portrait is fab... have had a go at the other statue and put a bg on it as well... looks ok not sure whether it is better with or without.... will post somewhere for you to have a look.

You are right about practising drawing not that I can see anything wrong with this one but it is a skill which can be learned and improved upon, I often feel the need to practice my drawing to make it easier to be more spontaneous when I'm painting and the more I do the better I get!!

  7. I love the almost rusted/aged effect of your background in the statue piece. I also think the graphite portrait is amazing and you've done a beautiful job on capturing texture in the skin.

  8. I like the second one because it looks like someone that I've met before that's just out of range of my memory.
