Ostrich

I think birds like ostriches and emus are such characters and have been meaning to paint one for a while particularly after seeing them painted by other artists who've done a fantastic job of them so finally got to have a go.  It's from a photo by Gary Jones but can't remember where it was taken.

I'm thinking of getting the acrylics out today and have another go at them - I tried a couple of times but found them difficult to work with so we'll see what happens!

  1. That expression... it's priceless! I can tell you have a connection to these birds by the way you've portrayed this one. I hope the acrylics respond the way you want them to, I'm eager to see the results!

  2. Fabulous! With this eye looking straight at you... Very beautifully painted with much fine detail where it matters and loose enough elsewhere.

  7. Brilliant, Sharon!
I love its eye... it is so alive it feels like this ostrich will come out of the picture!

  8. Sure Sharon, you can use a picture of the magpies.
Let me know when you publish your painting! ;-)
I used to draw and paint myself (you can see my artwork on my blog) but I am too much into photography these days... days are too short to be everywhere at once! LOL!
    Cheers, keep well!

    1. I've seen your artwork Noushka and it's stunning, it's difficult when you have two passions - I share my time between watching wildlife, hillwalking and painting - the hillwalking has taken a bit of a back seat at the moment with a couple of health problems but should be back out there soon! Thank you for letting my use your magpie shots - I'll let you know when I paint and of course I'll always credit you as the source, thanks again :-)

  9. Sharon - you managed to capture the personality of this big bird so well. Like you I find acrylics difficult to work with...not sure why but just struggle using them. I think they are more forgiving than watercolors but just like the transparency of watercolors more. Thanks for sharing. Have a great day.
