The Welsh Matterhorn

Cnicht - the Matterhorn of Wales!
Hello fellow bloggers!.... just a quickie today, this is a watercolour sketch I did last week as we were passing through Dwyfor in Snowdonia.  This is a mountain called Cnicht which comes from the word Knight in English (the silent K used to be pronounced in olden times apparently).  I just love how it looks from this angle - it is also known as the Welsh Matterhorn because of its appearance when viewed from the south-west but is actually the end of a long ridge.  It's part of the Moelwynion range of mountains in Snowdonia.  We'd been admiring the view from the car while driving from Harlech and decided to stop so that I could do a quick watercolour sketch - first time I've sat at the side of the road painting something but it was great fun especially in such beautiful surroundings on a gorgeously sunny day.....

    1. Thank you, painting outdoors is new to me and I'm used to working with tubes rather than a travel palette but it was great fun and good practice

    1. Judith I only did it because it was the only way I was going to get any painting in during a week's camping and because Gary kept telling me to - I probably wouldn't have done these sketches if he hadn't encouraged me so much - but glad I did because it was fun, definitely helps to get a real feel for a subject when you're sitting with it right in front of you which will hopefully help if I go on to do another painting

  4. Heh, it really resembles Matterhorn :) Sharon, I had missed yore last several postings and so enjoyed going through them now. The photos from your hiking trips are gorgeous! But the watercolours are just amazing! I love the colors you used to depict these rocky slopes. I miss the mountains so much, stuck here in flat-land... :)

    1. Thank you so much Blaga, what lovely comments it's nice to know that you go back through the comments like that - I like to do that too and glad you enjoyed the photos from our trip. I would miss my mountains too, I'm lucky to live where I do

  5. Thank you for your lovely comment on my blog the other day. I've just had a quick nosy around your blog and I feel I may have met a kindred spirit - it seems we've even painted the same owl photo taken by Angela Rijkboer (from Paint my photo?)!! I'm also passionate about animals and nature and used to go hillwalking although we haven't been nearly often enough this year what with the rubbish weather! Your work is beautiful and I love seeing the photos of your travels round Wales as it's somewhere I haven't visited (other than a brief trip to Cardiff about 100 years ago!) it looks beautiful! I have now also added you to my side bar!

    1. What a lovely comment - I hadn't realised your owl was from the same reference! The weather certainly has been rubbish although we were very lucky last week with no rain for a change. Most of the walking I've done this year has been in wind and rain so it was particularly nice last week. You should definitely visit Wales if you get the opportunity - you'd love it. Until next time, take care
